Galleria Den Haag
The redevelopment of the residential and retail centre Megastores, has recently started. GROUP A has been commissioned to upgrade the 85,000 sqm centre, which will change its name into ‘Galleria’. The phased redevelopment will start with the upgrade of the Van der Kunplein-entrance. Building permit is granted and construction will commence November 2017.
GROUP A's appointment comprises the design of both the redevelopment of the district-centre, the new build residential tower next door, and the new main entrance. As the appointment also includes the layout of the Leeghwaterplein and Van der Kunplein, GROUP A has been handed the opportunity to operate integrally at all levels.
The Megastores, located in The Hague Laakhaven near Holland Spoor, currently experiences a substantial vacancy rate, inadequate accessibility and a poor presence. In order to optimize accessibility, pedestrian flows and quality, landlord HS Retail has decided to thoroughly adjust and expand the centre. A new arrival and access to the Van der Kunplein-square, and a new main entrance along the Leeghwaterplein-square will provide more visibility and connects the shopping and leisure program. Together with the upgraded existing main entrance along the Waldorpstraat the overall presence of Megastores will contribute to it fresh new looks.
Perpendicular to the Leeghwaterplein a residential tower with up to 160 apartments of approx. 75 sqm each will be developed. The slender tower with its six angled facade surfaces, is perfectly oriented towards the sun. To maximise incoming light and views out, each floor consists of seven apartments around a central hallway. Building plinth and residential tower have been designed as one single unit, in which complementary programs reinforce each other. The residential tower marks the new main entrance and will be a beacon for the revamped Galleria.
