Refurbishment Nieuwe Kerk, Zierikzee, NL
GROUP A redesignated and redeveloped the Nieuwe Kerk in Zierikzee commissioned by SOZK. The Nieuwe Kerk, built in 1884, has been in use for various cultural events since the nineteen eighties.
Redesignation is in line with the current use of the church as an event space. With some smart and simple alterations to the building interior, the Nieuwe Kerk will further enhance the qualities of the Kerkplein square.
Starting point of the redesignation is to enhance the church's status in Zierikzee and beyond, by relatively simple means. A stand-alone customised 'piece of furniture', containing cloakroom, toilets, bar, kitchen/pantry and storage for chairs and tables, will be carefully positioned in the nave of the former church. A semi concealed staircase will lead the visitor upwards to an open area with excellent views on both the event floor as well as to the outside.
Mobile stage parts are adjustable in height and can be assembled in different configurations to create the stage required for any type of event. The parts can be stored in the customised 'piece of furniture' as well. Two transparent lobbies, located either side of it, allow the monumental doors to remain open at all times. A new floor in the centre of the church leaves the flanking tombstones untouched and incorporates efficient floor-heating.
