Completion interior Nieuwe Kerk Zierikzee

Following a design by GROUP A, the internal refurbishment of the Nieuwe Kerk Zierikzee is recently completed.

Main objective of the interior rejuvenation is to improve the church facilities for hosting cultural events, concerts and church services. Refurbishing the Nieuwe Kerk with relatively simple means, was from the start key to the enhancement of the curch's status within the community of Zierikzee and wider region.

The multifunctional 'piece of furniture', containing cloakroom, toilets, bar, pantry and storage for mobile stage parts, chairs and tables, is carefully positioned in the nave of the former church. A semi concealed staircase will lead visitor upwards to an open area with views on both the event floor as well as to the outside.

Mobile stage parts, adjustable in height, can be assembled in different configurations to create the stage required for any event. A new floor in the centre of the church leaves the flanking tombstones untouched and incorporates efficient floor-heating. Slender engineered draft lobbies either side of the centrally positioned multifunctional 'furniture piece', allow the monumental doors to remain open unaffected. Historic features such as the organ and pulpit will be retained as a strong reference to the original use of the building.

The first events have already taken place in this exciting new environment.
