Completion Brooklyn Hotel NDSMMonday 04 Nov '13
Last week the Brooklyn Hotel at the former NDSM shipyards in Amsterdam was handed over to its new owner Win Hotels, and will be fitted out over the coming months.
The hotel distinctively towers above the flanking four pitched roofed workshops and the large main-workshop of the Smederij. With reference to the former fifth pitched roofed workshop on this site, an abstracted version is rebuild at a height of 30 meters as topping of the newly constructed building.
In this new building both the characteristic outline of the roof, and the reddish color of the original masonry with its white striping, have architecturally been interpreted in a contemporary way. The 'workshop' topping is supported by a glass tower volume of eight floors, with a grid of white line markings framing the large glass windows of each individual hotel room. From their room hotel guests will have stunning views over the waters of the IJ and the city center beyond.
Following the completion of the refurbished four workshops in 2011 and the hotel last week, the large main-workshop will be completed mid 2014. Tenants for this large main-workshop will be Greenpeace and Pernod Ricard. The building will also house a public café-restaurant operated by the Brooklyn Hotel.
